A1 certificate

The A1 certificate, otherwise known as a posting certificate, proves that an employee remains subject to the social security rules of their home country even though they are working temporarily in another EU country. This document is important to ensure that the employee is covered by social security while working abroad and does not have to make any additional contributions. The employer must apply for the A1 certificate and it is usually issued by the competent authorities in the home country. The certificate must be carried for a certain period of time during the assignment abroad.

How does the A1 certificate work?

The employer must apply for the A1 certificate if an employee is working temporarily in another EU country. The employee remains subject to the social security regulations of their home country, as confirmed by this certificate. This prevents the employee from having to pay extra social security contributions in the country of assignment. It is important to have the A1 certificate to ensure that the employee is covered by social security during his assignment abroad and to avoid problems with the social security authorities. It facilitates cooperation between the different social security systems in the EU and ensures that employees are treated fairly.

Why is the A1 certificate important?

It is important to have the A1 certificate so that employees working temporarily in another EU country can continue to enjoy the social security protection of their home country. Employees in the country of assignment could have problems receiving social security benefits or be taxed twice if they do not present this certificate. It is also important to have the A1 certificate to ensure that social security contributions are paid correctly and to prevent fraud or abuse. It also helps to facilitate the legal certainty and mobility of workers within the EU.

How long does the A1 certificate remain valid?

The A1 certificate varies in its period of validity depending on the country and the specific circumstances of the work assignment. Normally, the certificate is valid for a specific period covering the period of temporary work. The A1 certificate must be valid for the entire duration of the assignment abroad and must be able to be presented to the competent authorities on request. It is necessary to extend or reissue the certificate in good time if the working conditions change or its period of validity expires.
